Treat yourself to a week filled with the beauty of nature, music, movement, meditation and more in a carefully curated retreat in Baja Sur, Mexico.
All this along with highly curated experiences around every corner and often where you least expect them. Fishing for your lunch while humpback whales watch, bask on uninhabited white sand beaches and enjoy up close encounters with mother and baby gray whales. We guarantee you’ll be awestruck, or, as we love to say, JOYstruck from the moment you arrive in magical Todos Santos.
The week includes an optional Master Class in Yoga For a JOYful Life with Maya Fiennes, an internationally renowned yoga teacher and acclaimed author of Yoga for Real Life. All of this complemented with aspects of the ground-breaking “Stress Toolkit” developed and taught by Made for Joy co-founder Emiliana Rodriguez.
We’ll help you maximize every moment of these extraordinary experiences. From Maya’s unique Yoga for Real Life used as a tool for grounding, abundance, self-love, trust and wisdom to Emiliana’s science-based mindfulness exercises, you’ll have the opportunity to learn more about your emotions and expand your appreciation for friends, life and nature. And all of this will be woven into the tapestry of the experience so that you may truly savor every moment.
We’ll be staying five nights in an ocean-view boutique hotel just outside the magical town of Todos Santos near a famous surfing site, and two nights eco-glamping on a pristine beach with whales and dolphins playing in their natural habitat yards away. We’ll have four two-hour boat trips in the lagoon led by expert guides, where you just might pet a whale (and yes, these photos are from our last trip)! You’ll have plenty of opportunities for movement and meditation, with yoga classes each day and a daily sunrise or sunset meditation. You’ll be well-fed with fresh, delicious food and our guides will share the history and characteristics of not only the whales but also the birds and other wildlife that inhabit this nature preserve.
You’ll also have the chance to reflect on your sense of purpose, and become part of a community of change makers who have the vision to cultivate and share Joy.
Today you'll arrive at the airport in San Jose del Cabo where you will be met by your guides and transferred to Todos Santos and Los Colibris Casitas. Physical distancing and N-95 masks will be provided. Upon arrival, relax in your ocean-view room or by the pool before joining us to kick off the Gathering of Joy with a welcome dinner at an architectural masterpiece, El Faro, a renowned beach-front casual restaurant and club. Meals: Dinner.
Join the famous Todos Santos fisherman in their pangas and fish for our lunch this morning, or simply go along for the ride and look for the humpback or gray whales and dolphins that call this area home in late February. We'll take our catch to Restaurante La Casita in town, where Chef Sergio will transform it into an array of cooked fish and sushi – it doesn't get any fresher! After lunch we’ll have a look around this Magical Puéblo, with your choice of exploring the boutique shops and artist galleries on your own, or joining an expert-guided tour of Todos Santos’ history, learning about the early missionaries and the booming sugar years as well as the town’s current incarnation as an artists’ colony and surfing hotspot. This evening we'll have dinner at one of the town's many great eateries. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Magdalena Bay Whale Watching Adventure
This morning we drive to Magdalena Bay for one of life’s most joyous adventures – interacting with the gray whales in the Pacific lagoons. When we arrive at Mag Bay we'll have lunch, then head out onto the water for two hours of engaging with the gray whale mothers, babies, young couples and sporting males as we make our way to Isla Magdalena, our home for the next two nights. On the island we'll stay in eco-glamping walk-in tents furnished with cots and sleeping bags, all served by a large kitchen/dining dome tent. The whales hang out in the waters surrounding the camp, and you can spend hours sitting beach-side and observing them at your leisure. We’ll celebrate our arrival with a happy hour, as well as yoga on the beach. We'll have the lagoon and all of its wildlife all to ourselves to enjoy.
Mag Bay is known for being a place in which gray whale mothers often bring their babies right up to the boat to say hello, sidle alongside us to spout water, or present themselves for a backrub. And it’s not only whales – dolphins call this protected lagoon home as well, as do a variety of gorgeous birds. And that’s just to give you an idea! The connections possible with our fellow mammals in the lagoons of Magdalena Bay are absolutely wondrous and should be at the top of any bucket list you may be creating. Magdalena Bay is the largest wetlands ecosystem on the west coast of Baja and one of the most important in North America. It is the prime calving ground for the gray whale, and the World Wildlife Fund ranks it as one of the most important coastal habitats in Mexico. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
This morning the sound that gets you out of bed might be the gentle whoosh of a whale blow. Or perhaps the splash of a whale breaching just a few feet from your tent. Or maybe the songs of one of the myriad bird species that call the area home. After breakfast we’ll head out in the boats with our guides in both the morning and after lunch, giving us plenty of opportunities to interact with the whales and other wildlife up close, with the times in between and afterwards marked by naturalist presentations, nature hikes and great food. It promises to be a magical Baja day. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
After breakfast we’ll have one last whale watching adventure as we make our way back to shore. We'll then get in the vans to drive back to Todos Santos, with a celebratory lunch stop along the way. Once back at our boutique hotel we'll enjoy a relaxing take-out dinner from a local organic restaurant and another opportunity for yoga. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Yoga / Joy Workshop
We'll start the day with sunrise meditation and yoga on a large deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Then, for those who wish, we'll spend the balance of the day at the spectacular El Mirador, a massive organic rattan structure high above the beautiful beaches with incredible "forever" views. This is where we'll focus on uncovering the potential of our own minds by rediscovering the Joy that is your birthright. From simple breathing practices to compassion exercises and teachings, we'll learn tools to help better manage stress and challenge in our lives. If you prefer, you can also spend the day on your own, walking the beach, surfing, or simply relaxing – your choice! We'll have lunch as part of the workshop at El Mirador, followed by dinner in town. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (for those at El Mirado), Dinner.
We'll wrap up our programming and fill in anywhere you wish to dig a little deeper. The day will be mostly unstructured and allow you the flexibility to finish out the week as you wish. Of course we'll have yoga and meditations mixed in, with options for surfing and horseback riding. Tonight we'll have a mezcal tasting followed by a Mexican cooking class/dance party. A great way to celebrate a wonderful week of Joy! Meals: Breakfast, dinner.
Say adios to Mexico, but not goodbye! Pack your bags and say farewell to the friends you are sure to have made. We will provide a safe transport to the airport for your flight back to the States. Meals: Breakfast.
